Most of the materials needed are inexpensive and can be found in any local hardware or building supply center. Cat trees are simple structures, all that’s needed to get started is a strong, balanced base, a few pieces of plywood to use as platforms and large tubes or doweling to be used as the pillars and supports.

To make your cat trees even easier, there are a number of craft and wood working websites which carry easy-to-follow plans and drawings. These convenient tree-making kits include everything you’ll need to design, construct and cover your new kitty haven.

These handy kits also make it easy to customize your cat trees to satisfy any particular needs and preferences your crazy kitty may need. Is your feline feeling a bit lazy? Then construct your trees to have a few higher platforms to promote climbing exercise. Do you own a senior cat who loves lying in the afternoon sun? For example, instead of using tubes or doweling for your tree’s supports consider using a dried and unusually shaped piece of driftwood or even a collection of thick, sturdy branches from a real tree! You could also use organic materials to cover the platforms such as sisal, hemp twine or braided pieces of cotton.
